Brian Barry-Murphy says there are “no guarantees” Cardiff City will be able to strengthen before Monday’s transfer deadline amid interest in Liverpool left-back Calum Scanlon.
The Bluebirds are keen to bring in a left-sided defender on loan and are understood to be interested in Scanlon, who Barry-Murphy says he knows well.
However, the Cardiff boss urged caution over any expectation of executing business late in the window, insisting nothing is certain at this stage.
Asked directly whether Scanlon was on his radar, Barry-Murphy said: “Obviously I know Callum from Liverpool, but it’s getting late in the window.
"While we’ve been pretty transparent about areas of the squad that we need to improve, when it gets this late we can’t have any guarantees or certainty that anybody will come to the club before the window shuts on Monday.”
Cardiff are facing stiff competition for Scanlon’s signature, with a number of clubs understood to be monitoring the 20-year-old, as Barry-Murphy continues to stress patience rather than desperation in the final days of the window.
Meanwhile, reports on Thursday morning suggested academy midfielder Matthew Apter could be set for a loan move away from the club.
The 20-year-old joined Cardiff from Everton last summer but has yet to make a senior appearance, with National League and League Two clubs said to be monitoring his situation.
Barry-Murphy distanced himself from the speculation, explaining academy loan decisions are handled separately.
“I’m not aware of that,” he said.
“Gavin Chesterfield manages academy loans and informs me at the final stage. Any player who’s training with us, Gavin will check with me first before anything goes ahead.”
