January 29 – Arsenal and Corinthians will contest the inaugural final of the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup. The Brazilians upset Gotham 1-0 while Arsenal beat ASFAR 6-0 at a half-empty GTech Stadium in Brentford.

With kickoff times at 12.30 pm and 6 pm local time, few supporters found their way to the ground in West London. They missed out on Brazilian club Corinthians upsetting Gotham from the United States.

Both teams are currently in off season mode, but Gabi Zannotti, Corinthians’ 40-year-old captain, scored the winner in the 83rd minute to eliminate the Concacaf champions 1-0.

The South American champions were rewarded with a final against Arsenal, who swept past ASFAR from Morocco 6-0, highlighting the inequity in the women’s club game.

The European champions humiliated the Moroccans with goals from Stina Blackstenius, Frida Maanum, Mariona Caldentey, Olivia Smith and Alessia Russo, twice.

The winners of Sunday’s final at the Emirates Stadium will receive $2.3 million in prize money, while the runner-up will bank $1 million.

In interview, Arsenal manager Renée Slegers said: “It’s one game and it’s, of course, the champions of the different continents. So it’s never going to be an easy game. I watched it earlier today, but we’re going to prepare in detail.

“They won the game with a goal and they did everything to get the win. They look like a very passionate, strong, disciplined and technically gifted team. So it’s going to be an exciting game.”

The Women’s Champions Cup will be played on an annual basis, except when there is a Women’s Club World Cup which FIFA, after delays, plans to stage for the first time in 2028.
