Journalist dismisses Liverpool five-year transfer agreement with PL gem as Man Utd and Man City 'make calls'

There have recently been reports that Liverpool have agreed a deal with Adam Wharton

Ben Jacobs has poured cold water on the recent rumours that Liverpool have agreed a five-year deal with leading transfer target Adam Wharton.

The Reds are looking at another busy and expensive summer transfer window this year, despite breaking the bank less than 12 months ago to aid their Premier League title defence.

Arne Slot’s hopes of back-to-back trophies have wilted and a top four finish is now the priority. This turbulent season is expected to force Liverpool’s hand on the market once again as they look to strengthen multiple areas within the squad.

Ben Jacobs addresses Liverpool and Adam Wharton rumours

In his latest GiveMeSport newsletter, Jacobs has reported that any suggestions Wharton has agreed a five-year deal with Liverpool are ‘wide of the mark’.

However, Jacobs reports: “Suggestions Wharton has already agreed a five-year deal with Liverpool are wide of the mark. Liverpool's priorities lie elsewhere both in terms of targets and positions.

“I sense if a midfielder is to arrive at Anfield this year, it will more likely be one with goals output who can also play in wide areas. Morgan Rogers is the type of profile some within Liverpool appreciate.”

Will Liverpool sign Adam Wharton this summer?

Liverpool are still interested in Wharton but they are up against competition from other clubs. Manchester City, Manchester United and Bayern Munich ‘have all made calls’ about the midfielder, according to Jacobs.

Crystal Palace are naturally eager to tie down their star midfielder to avoid losing him to a rival. He is under contract until 2029 but the Eagles ‘would love’ for him to sign an extension before the summer window.

Wharton is eager to play Champions League football, which could force him in a new direction at the end of this season. However, Palace feel they can convince him to stay for one more year, like they did with Michael Olise before his move to Bayern Munich.

Tottenham Hotspur are also admirers of Wharton but due to the uncertainty at the club right now, it remains to be seen if they will push forward with a pursuit for the midfielder.
