Jurgen Klopp set to return to Liverpool as German boss lands new role

Jurgen Klopp is set to make his emotional comeback to Anfield when the Liverpool Legends face Borussia Dortmund in a charity game for the LFC Foundation this March. The Liverpool team, which will be captained by the legendary Steven Gerrard on the occasion, will face their opponents on Saturday, March 28, 2026, with all proceeds benefiting the club's official charity.

Klopp, who left Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season, serves as the Foundation's honorary ambassador and is now confirmed as joining the coaching setup against another of his previous clubs, where he will act as Sir Kenny Dalglish's assistant for the March international break fixture. As a long-time supporter of LFC Foundation, the former Reds boss, who now works as Red Bull's global head of soccer, has repeatedly praised the impact of the charity and was a guest speaker at the LFC Foundation's Gala Ball in the city's Anglican Cathedral last year.

Klopp's Anfield return is fitting for the revered former manager, given his strong links to the Bundesliga opposition on the day. He managed Dortmund for seven years between 2008 and 2015, guiding their return to the pinnacle of German football during that time with two Bundesliga titles and two DFB Pokals (German Cup).

All of the proceeds from the Legends fixture will go directly towards the work of LFC Foundation and Forever Reds.

This year, funds raised will support the Foundation’s employability programmes, helping people across the community to find work, gain qualifications and develop new skills through mentoring and training. The match will also contribute to the Foundation’s long-term ambition of supporting 500,000 people a season by 2030.

“The LFC Foundation does an incredible job in the community, both in the Liverpool City Region and beyond," Klopp said in July 2024.

"I am really proud to continue my work with them and be named the first ever LFC Foundation honorary ambassador. I look forward to seeing what we can do with that now that I have more time on my hands.”

Speaking in 2023, Klopp also said: “I am happy and proud to be an ambassador for the LFC Foundation.

"To have people listening to me is the best thing I can do to help our Foundation. All of the people who work for our Foundation do an incredible job, I love them all, because the things they are doing are just incredible.

“It’s such a wonderful organisation and the best thing a football club can do is to give people good moments, hope, belief and the knowledge that they are actually never alone. I enjoy each moment with the Foundation, it’s really great, so it’s win-win situation for all of us."
