"I'm told..." - Ben Jacobs just shared update on Liverpool signing defender after Frimpong…

Liverpool are not expected to sign a new defender before the transfer deadline despite an injury to Jeremie Frimpong, GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Ben Jacobs has revealed.

The defending Premier League champions are unlikely to make a reactive move in the market following Frimpong’s setback in the 6-0 win over Qarabag on Wednesday night.

The Dutch international was forced off in the opening minutes of the Champions League contest after going down with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

Wataru Endo came on as Frimpong’s replacement, with Liverpool coming into the match with an already long list of defensive absences, including Conor Bradley, who is ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Liverpool Unlikely to Sign Frimpong Replacement

Liverpool manager Arne Slot before facing Barnsley in the FA Cup.

Jacobs, speaking on the Market Madness podcast, revealed that Liverpool are not expected to ‘panic buy’ despite Frimpong’s worrying injury.

"I don't think they're going to go into the market and panic buy, that's for sure. Liverpool have got a bit of a defensive crisis [after the injury to Jeremie Frimpong], but there's no guarantee they will sign a player between now and the end of the transfer window.

"For now, I'm told it's all quiet on the Liverpool front. They're not usually the kind of club in the market to be particularly impulsive and that's why I think we might get a situation where they back what they've got.

"Obviously it can't be completely discounted because Frimpong is going to be out for a period of time."

On Wednesday, Liverpool were also missing Joe Gomez, who is sidelined with a hip problem, as well as Ibrahima Konate, who remains on leave following the passing of his father.

Giovanni Leoni is also out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury, while Alexander Isak remains unavailable due to an ankle problem.

Frimpong has already missed a significant part of the campaign due to two separate setbacks, making just six Premier League starts this season.

Wednesday’s contest saw Ryan Gravenberch partner Virgil van Dijk at centre-back, while 18-year-old defender Amara Nallo made his first Champions League appearance of the season.

Xabi Alonso Open to Liverpool Return

Liverpool’s form has been disappointing in recent weeks, with the Reds failing to win their last five Premier League games and falling to sixth in the standings.

As a result, speculation over Slot’s future has once again intensified, with reports linking former Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso with replacing the Dutchman in the Anfield dugout.

As per Sky Sports, Alonso is believed to be open to a return to Liverpool, where he spent five years as a player, lifting the Champions League in 2025.

Liverpool remain highly unlikely to part ways with Slot at this stage of the campaign, as the Dutchman still has plenty of credit in the bank following a Premier League title victory last season.
