Roy Keane and Jamie Carragher 'taken aback' by what they're hearing around Liverpool now

Liverpool are in an odd spot right now, with Roy Keane and Jamie Carragher not liking the current events that are unfolding.

Since the turn of the new year, there has been a growing feeling of trepidation building in the Liverpool fanbase.

Flat performances, baffling errors, and not a single Premier League win in 2026 have all served to amplify the discontent.

Keane and Carragher have been critical. Carragher voiced concerns over Arne Slot during his most recent Monday Night Football analysis.

Despite their concerns over the manager and the team, it’s the reaction of the supporters that has taken them most by surprise.

Roy Keane and Jamie Carragher surprised at Liverpool fan reaction to Arne Slot

It’s a far cry from what Slot is used to when it comes to his relationship with fans.

He has spent most of his managerial career managing winning teams, and doesn’t seem as well equipped for negativity.

Slot’s strange press conference comments are the clearest example of this, and his responses sound less calculated by the week. Despite that, the two Premier League veterans are not best pleased with the push from Liverpool fans for a change in manager.

Discussing Slot on Stick to Football, Carragher says: “I’ve been taken aback by how quickly people have turned on him.

“People are talking about, you know, changing the manager right now and I just think you can’t change a manager who won the league a year ago. You have to obviously assess it at the end of the season.”

Keane agrees, and voices his surprise at how the attitude of the fanbase differs from the Liverpool he knew during his playing days, and even before.

He adds: “The reputation of Liverpool supporters has always been, as you said Jamie, many times they’ll always back the manager, generally speaking. But now, a few months after winning the league?”

Arne Slot needs to get fans back onside

Look, there’s plenty of readers who want the Dutchman gone as soon as possible.

The reality is, FSG don’t look like sacking Slot.

Agree or not, it looks like that’s the state of play, so getting behind the manager for the remainder of the season is the most productive way to go.

It’s not a one-sided relationship, though. If Slot wants to get the fans behind him again, he needs to start thinking about what he’s saying.

Oftentimes, his analytical nature and straight-talking lead him to say something that will fuel his nay-sayers’ beliefs. If Slot is to save his job, he needs everyone at the club to band together.

That includes those in the Anfield stands.
