Former Liverpool star Gary McAllister believes Micky van de Ven could be the perfect partner for Virgil van Dijk. It was claimed earlier this month that Van de Ven is pushing for a summer move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Liverpool are avid admirers of him.

The centre-back has three-and-a-half years left on his current deal, which expires in the summer of 2029. And although Spurs are to sit down with Van de Ven's representatives to discuss an improved contract, that hasn’t stopped speculation from increasing in recent weeks about a move to Anfield.

And McAllister, who also served on Brendan Rodgers’ coaching staff while making 87 appearances for the Reds, believes Van de Ven alongside international team-mate Van Dijk would be a 'decent combination'.

“I don't know if they necessarily need to sign two centre-backs in the summer,” he told OLBG. “I still think there's value in Virgil, still, as much as there's been some visible mistakes this season.

“He's still got years in those legs yet. It's very rare to see him lose individual battles, especially when a ball is played in behind, where he tends to just go into another gear.

“Occasionally, he's been done on the run, going up the sides of the penalty area, but as far as getting into the market it’s depending on what happens with Konate and whether they sit down and sort out a contract and he signs.

“I feel for Joe Gomez. It's been stop and start right from the minute he arrived there and he's never really been able to put in a big run of games.

“Who's available? Who's out there? Who are the centre-halves? The top-class ones, they're rare. Just like centre-forwards. They’re key positions.

“There’s one that impresses me a lot, and obviously he's playing in a team who are coming under a wee bit of a stick as well, but it's Mickey van de Ven at Spurs, and obviously he's Dutch too. That would be a decent combination.

“I think he's one of the top scorers at Spurs at the moment, so can get a goal and obviously he can stop goals. He's an impressive figure and again, having pace with balls in behind, so therefore, if you're leaving space behind to try to push up and squeeze games, you need somebody who can run and retrieve anything that's getting behind you.”

McAllister’s former Liverpool team-mate Emile Heskey believes Netherlands international Van de Ven would be a great signing for his old club.

“Van de Ven would be a huge signing for the club,” he told AceOdds.com. “Whether they can get him from Spurs is another thing, because while they’re struggling, will the new regime want to sell their best players? It’s not the old Spurs where they will dangle a carrot and suck that dry and take as much money out of it as possible."

“They’re looking to win stuff and have told the fans they want to be up there challenging, so you can’t sell your best players. It would be difficult, but he would be great. He’s fast, aggressive, and can cover ground.”

Van de Ven has also caught the eye of former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard this campaign, with the Kop icon picking the Dutchman’s solo effort against Copenhagen as his goal of the Champions League so far this season.

He said: "I love them all, in all honesty, I have to go for Micky van de Ven's, it had the lot. Pace, power, aggression, even when he's started the move from, it's the finish at the end and I love the celebration at the end."
