FIVE Premier League clubs have made it through to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League (Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham) while a sixth, Newcastle United, are in the play-off phase. A number of big names are also in the play-offs, including Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.

RAHEEM Sterling has left Chelsea after his contract was cancelled by mutual consent. The 31-year-old former England international, who cost Chelsea £ 47.5 million, still has 18 months remaining on his contract, but has not played for the club since May 2024. He is said to be on a wage of £ 325,000 per week.

SPAIN will host the 2030 World Cup final and the game will be played in either the Bernabéu Stadium or the Camp Nou. 

AUSTRIA and Germany have both ruled out a boycott of the controversial 2026 World Cup, although Austria’s ministry of defence has attached a risk factor to the competition. Meanwhile, Guardian US sports correspondent, Alexander Abnos has said, “Removing the US as World Cup host would be eminently sad and entirely justified.” He adds: ‘A country where safety is under threat from federal violence on the streets is not fit to stage soccer’s showpiece event.”

FIFA’s global transfer report for 2025 has revealed that the market topped € 10 billion for the first time and that there were 86,000 international transfers completed across the men’s and women’s game.
