We look ahead to Saturday’s Premier League game at Stamford Bridge between Chelsea and West Ham with our prediction and preview.
Chelsea vsWest Ham: The Key Stats
Chelsea make it five consecutive wins in all competitions in 69.1% of the Opta supercomputer’s 10,000 simulations of this match against West Ham United.
Chelsea have won both of their league matches under Liam Rosenior so far. Only three English managers have ever won their first three Premier League games – Bobby Gould in August 1992, Sam Allardyce in August 2001 and Craig Shakespeare (first 5) in April 2017.
West Ham have won their last two Premier League games, last winning three in a row in December 2023 under David Moyes.
Chelsea produced a strong second-half performance away to Napoli in midweek to secure automatic progression to the UEFA Champions League round of 16, recording a fourth consecutive win under new head coach Liam Rosenior.
Napoli 2-3 Chelsea xg race
It’s too early to say if Rosenior has genuinely improved the Blues, or if they are simply riding the wave of a new manager bounce. After all, the 41-year-old hasn’t had a great deal of time on the training pitch with his new squad as of yet – the visit of West Ham on Saturday is the club’s 10th consecutive game without a full week of preparation.
Chelsea have won 2-0 against Brentford and 3-1 against Crystal Palace in their last two Premier League games. They last won by a margin of at least two goals in three consecutive league games back in November 2020.
Indeed, Rosenior could become only the fourth English coach to win each of his first three games in the Premier League, after Bobby Gould in August 1992, Sam Allardyce in August 2001, and Craig Shakespeare (first 5) in April 2017.
West Ham are riding a wave of their own right now, though, having won three consecutive games in all competitions for the first time since November 2023. Given that the Hammers have had a full week to prepare for this game, they will be expected to hold their own.
Nuno Espírito Santo’s side are still favoured for relegation by the Opta supercomputer, which currently projects an 81.8% chance of them dropping down to the Championship – but if they were to take advantage of a tired Chelsea team here, they would put serious pressure on the likes of Nottingham Forest (8.3%) and Leeds United (8.4%) above them.
But there are genuine signs that Nuno could yet guide the team to survival. Consecutive league victories against Tottenham and Sunderland are the club’s first since December 2023 under David Moyes.
It’s as many wins as they had managed in their previous 18 league matches.
Meanwhile, the two shots on target they conceded last time out against Sunderland are the fewest they have faced in a match this season. It was a noticeably improved defensive performance considering they still rank second-worst for shots faced (346) and shots on target faced (124) overall this term.
Enzo Fernández has been one of Chelsea’s standout players of late; the Argentinian has recorded five goals and two assists from his last nine appearances in all competitions while playing various midfield roles to a high level.
Only Marcos Senesi (26) and Bruno Guimarães (24) have made more line-breaking passes into the opposition penalty area than Fernández (23) in the Premier League this season.
Several players, including Jarrod Bowen, Mateus Fernandes and Tomáš Souček, have stepped up in recent weeks for West Ham, but one player who has really come into his own is Crysencio Summerville.
The Dutch winger has opened the scoring in each of the Hammers’ last three games in all competitions. He has scored more goals in his last two Premier League games for the club (two) than he managed in his first 35 games (one) since joining from Leeds.
One player who will not appear in this game is Lucas Paquetá, who is on his way back to his native Brazil with Flamengo. James Ward-Prowse has also left to join Burnley on loan.
West Ham signed Adama Traoré from Fulham on Wednesday, reuniting the Spanish winger with Nuno, who managed him to great success at Wolves.
Cole Palmer assisted two goals from the bench for Chelsea in Naples and could be in line for a start here, although Rosenior will no doubt have an away trip to Arsenal in the EFL Cup in midweek at the back of his mind.
Tosin Adarabioyo remains unavailable for selection after injuring his thigh against Brentford on January 18, while longer-term absentees Levi Colwill, Dário Essugo and Roméo Lavia remain unavailable.
Chelsea vsWest Ham Head-to-Head
Chelsea have won their last four Premier League games against West Ham by an aggregate score of 15-2. It’s their longest winning run against the Hammers since a run of six between 2006 and 2008.
West Ham have won just one of their last 19 Premier League away games against Chelsea, losing the last five in a row since a 1-0 victory in November 2019.
Chelsea have scored 109 goals in 59 Premier League games against West Ham, their second-highest tally against an opponent after Spurs (122 in 67 games).
The Opta supercomputer regards Chelsea as strong favourites to win this match, with the Blues coming out on top in 69.1% of simulations.
A draw was the second most common result, occurring in 17.3% of sims, while West Ham won a third consecutive league game in 13.6%.
