Liverpool could be about to repeat their Marc Guehi mistake after Fabrizio Romano update - opinion

Liverpool allowed long-time transfer target Marc Guehi to move to Manchester City in the January transfer window.

The Englishman’s transfer followed on from the Sky Blues, also completing a deal for Antoine Semenyo, who was linked to Liverpool.

Guehi was a much, much bigger blow for the Reds, though, given their obvious weaknesses at centre-back.

Name a Liverpool transfer window worse than January 2026…

Ibrahima Konate is out of contract at the end of June, so he’s currently set to leave for free. Joe Gomez could leave in 2026, and Giovanni Leoni is missing the remainder of 2025/26.

After the Guehi saga, we have seen reports linking Liverpool with Jeremy Jacquet.

Liverpool waiting for Jeremy Jacquet

But just like the former Crystal Palace centre-back, the Reds aren’t the only Premier League team interested.

It has been suggested that Jacquet would be open to joining Chelsea, who are being linked with a January transfer.

But FSG, as ever, look set to sit on their hands and let yet another player potentially move to a Premier League rival.

Fabrizio Romano shared an update on the centre-back’s transfer situation this week, and his words are no doubt going to annoy fans, with Liverpool seemingly taking a longer-term approach and waiting until the summer.

He said: “Liverpool in contact with the agents of the player, respecting the fact that Rennes want to sell the player not now, but for the summer, not for this January window.

“So Liverpool are in conversation with the agents and Liverpool want to try. So let’s see what’s going to happen there and for sure it’s going to be an interesting case to follow.”

FSG transfer strategy has become infuriating

In all honesty, it makes absolutely zero sense for FSG to stand idle and let the winter transfer window shut without a single defensive reinforcement.

Yes, there are negatives when it comes to finding short-term solutions to longer-term problems.

But Guehi and Jacquet clearly aren’t that, as Liverpool wanted both players in the summer anyway.

So why on earth can’t they just go out and sign a defender before Monday? You know, because Slot currently has one available centre-back and all three of his first-team right-backs are injured, potentially for a while.
