Liverpool have just days left to bring in new players before the winter transfer window shuts. While back-to-back Premier League titles are looking unlikely, the Champions League and FA Cup trophies are still within reach.

Arne Slot will be working tirelessly to strengthen areas his squad is lacking. Injuries to Jeremie Frimpong, Conor Bradley, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez have made his task even more challenging.

Liverpool's high-priority centre-back target, Marc Guehi, slipped away as Manchester City secured a deal for the defender this month. Meanwhile, Andy Robertson has been linked with a move to Tottenham, despite club captain Virgil van Dijk urging the left-back to stay at Anfield.

However, Liverpool fans have something to look forward to as beloved ex-manager Jurgen Klopp returns to the dugout for a charity match. Here, the ECHOprovides all the latest updates on Liverpool's transfer news.

Trent Alexander-Arnold targeted

Trent Alexander-Arnold's future at Real Madrid is uncertain, hinting at a possible return to the Premier League. But it might not be a homecoming to his childhood club on Merseyside.

Pep Guardiola is eager to reinforce the right-back position at City, and Alexander-Arnold is a potential candidate. Liverpool supporters would be stunned to see the academy graduate join a direct Premier League competitor, but ex-Manchester United scout Mick Brown thinks it could happen.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: "I have heard Man City are looking at him, and that's interesting because we know they have been looking for a right-back for some time. That's what Pep Guardiola wants, a natural right-back, and Alexander-Arnold would be perfect for that because he can also step into the midfield."

Whether Alexander-Arnold would consider a switch to City, especially if the option of returning to Anfield became available, is yet to be determined. He parted ways with the Reds amid a storm, but the defender is still likely to favour Slot's side over Man City.

Upon his departure from Liverpool, he said: "I fell in love with the club from a very, very young age and that's something that has grown and grown day in, day out. It has given me the opportunities to go and achieve everything I've ever wanted, it has given me the opportunities to achieve everything beyond my wildest dreams.

"I can never repay enough of what's been given to me and I don't take it for granted at all. But, like I said, at the end of the day I did have to make a decision and it is one that has been very difficult. I just hope that people will be able to see and understand that I've given everything to the club, I've given everything every single day for 20 years now.

"I've sacrificed everything, I've done everything I've ever needed to do to try to help the team win games. And no matter what, that will never change. I'll forever be a fan of the club; there'll be no change in that. I'll always be watching the games, I'll be supporting from a distance."

Jurgen Klopp's March return

Former Liverpool manager Klopp will make his much-anticipated comeback to the Anfield dugout in March. However, it isn't to take permanent charge of any side, but instead lead Borussia Dortmund in a fundraising fixture for the LFC Foundation.

The Liverpool vs Dortmund Legends fixture is dedicated to generating funds for the club's official charity and will be held during the international break.

Sir Kenny Dalglish will manage the Reds, while Klopp takes charge of BVB in the opposing dugout. The 58-year-old, who now serves as Red Bull's global head of football, has previously praised the LFC Foundation and will be eager to demonstrate his continued backing in a few weeks' time.

Speaking in 2023, Klopp said: "I am happy and proud to be an ambassador for the LFC Foundation. To have people listening to me is the best thing I can do to help our Foundation. All of the people who work for our Foundation do an incredible job, I love them all, because the things they are doing are just incredible.

"It's such a wonderful organisation and the best thing a football club can do is to give people good moments, hope, belief and the knowledge that they are actually never alone. I enjoy each moment with the Foundation, it's really great, so it's win-win situation for all of us."
