Reporter Ben Jacobs believes Liverpool will be attracted to Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers this summer
The Reds have seen multiple weaknesses exposed this term and they are expected to spend big once again when the summer transfer window opens.
Despite Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai all impressing, Liverpool want to add new midfield options to their roster. Two main names on the radar right now are Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.
Liverpool deal with Adam Wharton ‘wide of the mark’
Writing for his latest GiveMeSport newsletter, Jacobs has claimed the five-year deal rumours between Liverpool and Wharton are ‘wide of the mark’.
Instead, the reporter believes Villa’s Rogers would be the kind of player Liverpool can appreciate. The 23-year-old midfielder, who can also play on the wing, has contributed eight goals and seven assists in all competitions so far this season.
“Liverpool's priorities lie elsewhere both in terms of targets and positions. I sense if a midfielder is to arrive at Anfield this year, it will more likely be one with goals output who can also play in wide areas. Morgan Rogers is the type of profile some within Liverpool appreciate,” Jacobs said.
Morgan Rogers a long-standing transfer target for Liverpool
Liverpool were linked with Rogers last year as he continues to impress with Aston Villa. His impressive return of 14 goals and 16 assists last season drew a lot of attention towards him, with Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain also showing interest.
It was reported back in October that Villa value Rogers in the region of €80 million (£70m). The midfield market nowadays is exceptionally high, especially after the likes of Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo made nine-figure moves to Arsenal and Chelsea respectively.
Rogers is under contract at Villa Park until 2031, having only signed a new contract in November. So the club are far from under any pressure to sell one of their most important members of the team.
It will likely take a handsome bid from Liverpool or any other club to convince the Villans to part ways with Rogers but it’s a transfer saga worth keeping an eye on.
