Manchester City had a direct interest in events elsewhere last night, and Bernardo Silva openly admitted he was hoping for a Benfica result that would benefit City’s position.
That brief moment quickly shifted attention back to a familiar subject… his transfer future. Speaking to Brazilian journalist Fred Caldeira, the Portuguese midfielder once again stopped short of offering clarity, but did little to close the door on change.
“I have an idea, I do have an idea. But I don’t think this is the right time to talk about it,” he said.
In Portugal, several figures linked to Benfica have already suggested that a return at the end of the season is a very real possibility. Club president Rui Costa even said in October 2025 that he’s “absolutely convinced” that Bernardo wants to be a Benfica player.
But he stressed that any decision will be communicated jointly with City. “When the time comes, together with the club, with Manchester City, it will be announced and you will know, obviously.”
The timing of the comments has only intensified the debate. And the former Benfica player has never hidden his affection for the club, even while remaining fully committed to City.
For now, there is no confirmation of what comes next. Still, the midfielder repeatedly references having a plan – not a retirement one yet. That, combined with his careful choice of words, suggests that his future beyond this season is already taking shape.
City’s priorities remain clear on the pitch. Off it, however, Bernardo’s next move continues to loom large as the campaign progresses.
