Lakers' LeBron James reveals up-to-date thoughts on retirement

LeBron James took a step into his past, and naturally, he was asked about his future.

On Wednesday night, James and his Los Angeles Lakers played in Cleveland, and they lost to LeBron's hometown team, the Cavaliers.

While there in his time with the media, though, James was asked about retirement.

The question came in the context of musings that James could actually come back to Cleveland to play in the 2026-27 season as a free agent.

James, though, provided only limited insight, including pushing back on the idea of a "retirement tour."

This is what The Athletic's Dan Woike shared on X:

LeBron James says he hasn't thought about a "farewell tour" because he hasn't had the conversation with himself or his family about retirement yet. Said that would come after.

The gist here appears to be that James wouldn't make a decision ahead of time enough to have some kind of farewell.

Instead, he'd get through a season and assess things with his family, which would then make any retirement announcement something that would come in the offseason.

The NBA's all-time leading scorer is 41 years old and still playing at a high level, albeit not the incredible caliber of play he once brought to the floor.

He will be a free agent after the season, which adds a layer to any planning he might want to do about his future.

For now, he'd like to get the Lakers into the playoffs and see what kind of noise he can make alongside Luka Doncic.
