Liverpool host Newcastle United in a huge Premier League clash this weekend and several players could miss out

Liverpool could be without several key first-team players on Saturday as Newcastle United visit Anfield for a crunch Premier League clash (20:00 GMT).

Both sides are currently outside the top four but will believe they have a strong chance of qualifying for the Champions League come the end of the season, both clubs having performed admirably so far in this season’s competition.

Liverpool qualified automatically for the last 16 with a 6-0 victory over Qarabag on Wednesday night, while the Magpies drew 1-1 with holders PSG at the Parc des Princes but had to settle for a place in the play-offs.

Liverpool injury news ahead of Newcastle clash

As many as 16 players could miss out overall, with Liverpool having the greater number of injury issues between the two clubs at present. One Reds star who is almost certain to miss out is Frimpong, who Slot suggested will spend a period on the sidelines after his injury in midweek.

“He will be out for a period of time,” said Slot. “If you have a problem and have to go off like that, that usually tells you straight away. Let's wait and see what the upcoming days can bring.”

The Dutchman suggested that defensive duo Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate could be back to face the Magpies, though. Gomez was out in midweek after an injury picked up during defeat at Bournemouth, while Konate has been on compassionate leave following the passing of his father. Curtis Jones, meanwhile, is also a doubt after missing out against Qarabag due to illness.

Slot said on the trio at full-time: “Curtis was sick so we have to wait and see how it evolves. Joe might be tight but hoping and expecting to have Ibou back. I cannot guarantee this yet but we're hoping that Ibou will be back with us and Joe will be back.”

Elsewhere, Liverpool are set to be without five more players on Saturday. Conor Bradley is out for the season after having knee surgery, while record signing Alexander Isak is another long-term absentee with a leg fracture and Geovanni Leoni with a ruptured ACL. Young duo Stefan Bajcetic and Jayden Danns are thought to be nearing a return to fitness but are expected to remain out of contention for now.

Newcastle injury news amid Bruno Guimaraes update

Liverpool’s visitors Newcastle, meanwhile, will hope to be boosted by the return of captain Bruno Guimaraes. The Magpies have remarkably never won a Premier League game without the Brazilian since his arrival in 2022 and he has not featured in the last two matches with an ankle issue. The 28-year-old returned to the bench against PSG in midweek but was not risked by Eddie Howe, meaning his involvement at the weekend likely remains a doubt for the moment.

The same can be said for Jacob Murphy, who also returned to bench in Paris but did not come on either. The winger has not featured in the last five matches with a hamstring injury and will hope to return to action at Anfield.

Meanwhile, Joelinton picked up an injury during the defeat at home to Aston Villa last weekend and is expected to be out for “a few games”, said Howe ahead of midweek.

Fabian Schar and Tino Livramento are both long-term absentees, not expected back until late spring. Emil Krafth remains on the sidelines with a knee injury, while Jamal Lascelles has not been training with the first-team due to fitness concerns and has been linked with a January exit.
