Former England manager Gareth Southgate has been taking time away from management since resigning following the Three Lions’ 2-1 defeat to Spain in the 2024 European Championship final.
Southgate spent eight years in charge of the Three Lions, guiding them to two major finals – Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 – but the Football Association (FA) ultimately felt shortchanged as both finals ended in defeat.
Southgate was replaced by Thomas Tuchel and, despite his extensive managerial experience, has yet to return to the touchline. During his career, he began at Middlesbrough before joining the England set-up as an academy coach and later taking charge of the Under-21s.
Now, Southgate has launched a podcast titled The Football Boardroom. The show aims to explore the issues, decisions, and stories behind the headlines – not sensationally, but thoughtfully.
It promises an intelligent and detailed examination of how football really works, inviting fans into the discussion. He will be joined on the podcast by former Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow and Henry Winter, a seven-time award-winning journalist with four decades of experience reporting on the game and holding its leaders accountable.
Purslow, who helped secure Liverpool’s sale to Fenway Sports Group (FSG) in 2010, began his career at the Reds as managing director with responsibilities akin to a CEO.
One of his early achievements was negotiating an £80million, four-year sponsorship deal with Standard Chartered – a partnership that continues to this day.
Purslow also played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s £300million takeover from then-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett during a turbulent period for the club.
After stepping down from Liverpool, he later joined fellow Premier League side Chelsea. The first episode of The Football Boardroom has been released and is now available on all major platforms.
