Yet doubts remain over how far Hansi Flick’s side can go in the competition, largely due to the team’s continued defensive issues.
Barcelona conceded again on Wednesday night against FC Copenhagen, meaning they have now failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 11 Champions League matches.
Copenhagen joined PSG, Newcastle, Club Brugge, Slavia Prague, Eintracht Frankfurt, Chelsea and Olympiakos in finding the back of Barca’s net in European competition this season.
The last time Barcelona did manage to prevent the opposition scoring in a UCL game was last season when they beat Borussia Dortmund 4-0 in the second leg of their quarter-final tie.
And Flick is well aware of this fact, too. He spoke before the game at his pre-match press conference of the importance of keeping a clean sheet against FC Copenhagen.
”We have to go step by step, not look for the second goal before the first. We have to play this game and respect Copenhagen,” he told reporters.
“The first thing is to keep a clean sheet, but we also have to score goals to win and be in the top eight.”
Yet Barcelona’s hopes of keeping a clean sheet were ruined after just four minutes when Viktor Dadason handed the visitors a shock lead.
“I wasn’t very happy with my team in the first half; we were much better in the second. We need to improve,” said Flick afterwards. No prizes for guessing exactly where he wants his team to improve.
Barcelona did manage to mount another comeback - for just the ninth time this season - but Flick will know his team must stop gifting opposition teams easy goals if they are to go all the way.
