Liverpool transfer news and rumours: Right-back update, Bayern star eyed, and more

If Liverpool are to do any significant business this January, they need to get moving.

Monday’s 7pm deadline is fast approaching, and the Reds must decide if they’re going to strengthen or sit on their hands between now and then.

Jeremie Frimpong’s injury has added a perceived sense of urgency, though that feeling is more among the fans than the people who make those decisions.

Here’s the big news on the transfer front.

Liverpool not expected to sign a right-back

First and most pressing — to some of us, at least — is addressing the dearth of options at right-back after Frimpong’s untimely injury.

Liverpool aren’t planning to sign a replacement, even though it’s now two out of action.

As usual, FSG don’t want to rush a decision. It seems the squad is going to be stretched past comfort between now and the end of the season.

Dayot Upamecano eyed amid contract stall

Possibly one for the summer, but nonetheless exciting, is Dayot Upamecano’s deteriorating situation at Bayern.

Upamecano has not accepted an offer to extend his contract, despite crazy numbers being reported.

Liverpool are interested in securing his services, and they could now have the opportunity at the end of the season — for free.

Jeremy Jacquet wants Chelsea and Liverpool want Norwegian youngster

Another French centre-back to add into the mix — Jacquet’s preference has been revealed as Chelsea.

It’s not the end of the road for Liverpool in their pursuit, but it does drop the odds of them winning this race. A race that Bayern are also in.

Finally, Liverpool’s interest in Jens Kjerto-Dahl has come to light. A 6’4″ holding midfielder from Norway, it’s one to keep an eye on with interest from all over Europe.
