Priority target: Liverpool in talks to land the best signing since Ekitike for £69m - opinion

Liverpool thrashed Qarabag to wrap up their Champions League group phase with a flourish, but Arne Slot has so much to sort out over the business months of the campaign.

Let's not forget that Liverpool rocked up in France and brushed Marseille aside in the preceding fixture, only to crumble on the south coast against Bournemouth days later, Bournemouth snapping Liverpool's unconvincing undefeated run and serving a sobering reality check in the Premier League.

It's been an unconvincing campaign, with an unconvincing summer transfer window leading to unconvincing performances after sweeping change.

However, Hugo Ekitike stands proud as a superstar, and FSG will surely be looking to repeat that trick.

Liverpool looking to repeat Ekitike deal

Hailed as an "unbelievable talent" by Sky Sports reporter Nubaid Haroon after his latest masterclass, Ekitike is a passionate and prolific striker who has the potential to become a world-class superstar at Anfield.

The France international came close to joining Newcastle last year, but he made his decision and moved to Liverpool from Eintracht Frankfurt in a £79m package, repaying the faith with 13 goals and four assists across 31 matches so far.

A diamond among coals, the 23-year-old has been head and shoulders above his fellow recruits on Merseyside, and Liverpool will want to sign someone who can enjoy a similar impact this summer.

According to Caught Offside, Liverpool are looking to grow their French contingent, having held initial talks with Real Madrid for the potential transfer of Eduardo Camavinga.

Eduardo Camavinga

Los Blancos appear to have little interest in selling the robust centre-midfielder, though sources suggest that a deal could be done for around €80m (equating to £69m).

Arsenal are also interested, and it's unlikely that this budding saga will be resolved this month, thus dragging it over to the summer window.

Why Liverpool should sign Camavinga

Despite his experience as an accomplished member of Real Madrid's set-up, Camavinga is still only 23. Described as a "real war machine in midfield" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, he has completed 92% of his passes and won 67% of his duels in La Liga this term, featuring 15 times.

Real Madrid's Eduardo Camavinga

Camavinga is not without his less-than-desirable injury record, but there's no question this is one of the most talented midfielders in Europe, having won the lot with Los Blancos.

With such obvious brilliance within his skillset, there's a sense that Camavinga could be Liverpool's best signing since Ekitike, especially when considering how he would be comparatively affordable (look at Florian Wirtz, for example, who signed for £116m in June).

A midfielder who is adept at breaking lines and influencing from deep while maintaining a level of combativeness in front of the backline are key features of Camavinga's skillset, and exactly what Liverpool need. Liverpool's backline have been woeful this year, but they have not been effectively protected by the midfield in front of them.

Up front, Liverpool have also flattered to deceive, though Ekitike has easily been the standout, playing with a gusto that would see him succeed for any top-performing side across Europe.

The midfield is the heart of the system, and by signing Camavinga, Slot would land the perfect player to help rewire a struggling system and catapult Liverpool back into the ascendancy.

Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike

Whether Liverpool choose to invest heavily in a centre-midfielder with so many other problems threatening to engulf Slot's side remains to be seen, but if a midfielder is targeted this summer, FSG will find no better arrival than Camavinga.
