'Makes enormous sense' - Arsenal urged to sign striker wanted by Premier League rivals

Arsenal have been urged to firm up their interest in Karl Etta Eyong amid fears over their faltering Premier League title challenge.

The Gunners, as well as Manchester UnitedandChelsea, have scouted the Levante striker this season, as talkSPORT revealed in November.

None of the trio have made a meaningful move for the Cameroon international yet, but West Ham did make an initial enquiry.

Earlier this month, talkSPORT confirmed that Barcelona are actively exploring new forward options with Robert Lewandowski set to become a free agent in June, and Eyong is on their radar.

However, European football expert Andy Brassell believes the latter is 'a really Arsenal type of forward' that would work for Mikel Arteta.

Eyong, a £2.5million arrival last summer, has nine goal contributions in LaLiga, all of which came within the first ten gameweeks.

By mid-November, the 22-year-old was only behind Kylian Mbappe in terms of output in the Spanish top-flight, before experiencing a drought as Levante tumbled into the relegation zone.

Despite this, Brassell told talkSPORT.com: "He's been really good.

"Levante have been in the relegation zone for pretty much all of the season, [but] Eyong is able to stand up in the biggest games and make an impact in those biggest games.

"It would be a big leap going from Levante and doing pretty well there, to being productive at Arsenal, because at the moment, despite the defeat to [Manchester] United, Arsenal are so good that you're looking at only the very, very best being able to crack that team, really."

Karl Etta Eyong to Arsenal

Eyong's six LaLiga goals this campaign represent a better output than every Arsenal player in the Premier League.

Viktor Gyokeres and Leandro Trossard have managed just five, one ahead of Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Mikel Merino, and Eberechi Eze.

On how Eyong would fit in, Brassell added: "As a medium-term prospect, I could definitely see him working for Arsenal.

"Why? I think he's a really Arsenal-type forward. One of those guys who could fit in a few different places over the front three.

"I think you could see him contributing from a wide position. He can drop inside and score goals as well."

Eyong to Arsenal 'makes enormous sense'

"He's not massive, but he's good in the air," Brassell continued.

"There are so many elements that recommend him, not just as a Premier League player, but as an Arsenal player.

"In terms of Arsenal getting someone like him and stashing him for the future, I think it would make an enormous amount of sense."

Arsenal, like the rest of Eyong's suitors, will have to wait until the summer to officially make their move for the young striker.

Levante's No.21 had already played and scored for Villarreal this season prior to joining the club's domestic rivals.

As a result, he won't be able to make another move in January, as players are blocked from playing for three clubs in one season.

This may come as a huge blow to Arsenal, who have failed to win any of their past three league games and could use the extra firepower.

On the title race, Inside Gooners host Harry Symeou said: "City are not showing at the moment that they can go on that kind of run, but you know in the back of your mind that they could do it.

“And that’s why I’m still a little bit anxious and nervous about it and why I won’t say, even when we were seven points clear, that it was done because there’s that within them.

“With Aston Villa, I don’t think Aston Villa have what it takes. But it’s the fear of it being Unai Emery that makes it worse for me.

“There’s this thing that keeps happening every time we play them or we drop points to them where people start to become really revisionist and say ‘he should have stayed’ and ‘he should have had more time’.

“He’s absolutely the right manager for Villa. He wasn’t the right manager for Arsenal. That is (a) fact. And that’s my worry about them.”

“I do wonder with him, does he get a little bit further in the Europa League, though, and go ‘right, this is my thing’.

“Does he start to prioritise (the Europa League) in a way that sees them drop off in the league.

“That’s part of the reason why I’m not as fearful of them still at this stage.”
