The Magpies are yet to strengthen their squad this month, and while the club's recruitment team have been weighing up defensive options in recent weeks, Howe has previously stressed the importance of only making signings if they fit into the club's long-term plan.
That is difficult in the winter window, and while Howe hasn't completely ruled out any late additions, it's far more likely that the window closes without any business at St James' Park.
Howe had previously suggested Newcastle's end to the window would be quiet, and asked for an update this morning, he said: "I don't anticipate that changing but with time left there's still the time for that to be the case."
Newcastle are looking to build on their stirring display at PSG in midweek when they take on Liverpool at Anfield tomorrow night.

Champions League play-off draw: Who can Newcastle get and when will games be played?
The Magpies could be boosted by the return of Bruno Guimaraes, who is in contention to return after missing the last two games with an ankle injury.
Howe said: "Slightly unknown. He [Guimaraes] did really well to be with us in Paris. That was more down to the fact he was desperate to be there and support the players.
"We did very light training and he participated in that but it was next to nothing. He trained with us yesterday but that was more of a test. Let's see how he is today. This will be the day we decide."
Newcastle will be without Joelinton at Anfield, but there was positive news on the Brazilian this week.
Howe said: "He flew on to Barcelona after the game to get an injection into his groin. It was good news.
"The specialist feels he only needs one. That means his return could be quite quick. We're looking at weeks, not months. We're slightly unsure on the exact date but positive news."
Tino Livramento is also making good progress in his recovery from the hamstring injury he suffered earlier this week, though the right-back is still unlikely to be back in action before March.
Howe said: "He's doing well. I believe he's having a second scan today to see the progress. Fingers crossed it's good news.
"If it is, fingers crossed he'll be back running outside. I think we're still probably five to six weeks away. We're looking at an early March return providing everything goes well."
