Jeremie Frimpong’s debut season at Anfield hit yet another low point on Wednesday night when the Dutch international was forced off just four minutes into Liverpool’s Champions League demolition of Qarabag. The right-back, who joined from Bayer Leverkusen for £33.5 million last summer, pulled up clutching his hamstring during a defensive sprint and immediately signalled to the bench that he could not continue.
Initial assessments suggested Frimpong sustained a muscle injury rather than structural damage to his knee, offering a glimmer of hope that the setback may not prove as catastrophic as first feared. Speaking immediately after the 6-0 thrashing of Qarabag, Slot confirmed: “It’s a muscle injury, but I don’t know how long that is going to be. It’s a muscle so it’s not a knee [injury] and a muscle usually has to do with overloading a player”
This marks Frimpong’s third muscular injury of the 2025-26 campaign, a deeply concerning pattern that has seen him miss 18 matches for club and country since his high-profile summer move. According to data from Transfermarkt, the right-back has endured 54 days out with hamstring problems this season alone, missing 12 games during one spell, plus an additional 21 days out with another hamstring complaint that cost him four matches, and 13 days sidelined with a third hamstring issue that ruled him out of two fixtures.
Now Arne Slot, speaking in his pre-Newcastle United press conference, has provided a further update on Frimpong and revealed he will be out for a “few weeks”:
“Definitely not in tomorrow, out for a few weeks but not as bad as we thought. So something positive from something not so positive.”
“Konate trains today and is in the squad tomorrow.”
