Deadline set for Liverpool target to accept a contract after 'very good offer' submitted - journalist

Liverpool have not made a first-team signing in the 2026 January transfer window, but continue to be linked with centre-backs.

It’s easy to see why, given the state of play at Anfield right now and heading into next season.

Virgil van Dijk was the only available senior centre-back when Liverpool beat Qarabag on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Joe Gomez could leave in 2026, and Ibrahima Konate is due to become a free agent at the end of June.

To strengthen Arne Slot’s backline, there have been suggestions Liverpool could look at Jeremy Jacquet in the summer, though he is wanted by Chelsea now.

Meanwhile, it was mooted earlier this week that a move for Dayot Upamecano could be possible amid his Bayern Munich contract situation.

The Frenchman, like Konate, is on course to be a free agent later this year.

Bayern have submitted an offer to Upamecano, with Christian Falk telling CFBayernInsider that the Bundesliga outfit have set a deadline of mid-February for the centre-back to accept what they feel is a ‘very good’ offer.

It’s stated: “They have told the defender that he must decide by mid-February whether to accept the contract offer that has been on the table since Christmas.

“The club feel that they have submitted a very good offer and that it will not be improved. It is up to the player to take it or leave it.

“Upamecano is apparently happy at the club and wants to continue under Kompany, but in recent weeks recurring questions have arisen about details of the defender’s salary and a release clause. Upamecano and his representatives negotiated hard, making several demands, and as a result, Bayern have taken a hard stance.”

Liverpool have another Bundesliga defender on their radar

It is not just Upamecano who could be looked at by Liverpool this summer, though.

Nico Schlotterbeck has also been linked to the Merseyside outfit during the 2025/26 season.

It has even been suggested that Liverpool could sign Schlotterbeck ahead of Bayern Munich.

The defender wants to win titles in Germany, but if Bayern are not planning a move for the 26-year-old, he may find that a hard goal to achieve.
