Alexander Isak is currently recovering from a broken leg and will not face the fierce away-end backlash against Newcastle United.

Arne Slot has confirmed that Alexander Isak is still a “while” away from returning for Liverpool.

Having not been asked about Isak in weeks, the Dutchman was inevitably grilled on the £130million striker with Newcastle United coming to town. The Magpies have struggled to reach the same heights this season without the 26-year-old, who scored 62 goals in three seasons at St James’ Park.

Isak downed tools to force through a Liverpool move - burning all of his bridges on Tyneside in the process. However, more injuries than goals since the British record switch has given Toon fans solace.

Alexander Isak woes at Liverpool

Just three strikes in a Liverpool shirt has done little to justify his hefty price tag. The most recent was against Tottenham Hotspur - which saw him break his leg in the act.

Isak is currently in rehabilitation and there are fears he may not play again this season. It is safe to suggest there has not been much sympathy given from the Newcastle fans that, until last summer, worshipped the ground he walked on.

‘It will take a while’ - Arne Slot

When asked to provide an update on Isak ahead of Liverpool vs Newcastle, Slot told reporters: “No, he is not on the pitch yet. I think it is called a walker (the equipment he has been using).

“He is just out of his walker that so that tells you he is not expected on the pitch today or tomorrow in terms of his recovery work. So it will take a while before he is back, which we knew about."

Newcastle United a ‘tough’ game

Slot also expects a fierce encounter when Newcastle travel to Anfield tomorrow. Eddie Howe is aiming to end a 31-year hoodoo at Liverpool, with the Magpies not winning there since in all competitions since 1995.

“Every game is crucial but the way we have positioned ourselves now makes every game crucial because top four is what we want to achieve,” he added. “They are all crucial games and we have experienced how tough it is against Newcastle, always tough games for us but for them as well. One to look forward to because we both had a good result in the week and a home game at Anfield is always something to look forward to."
