**Liverpool will be without the injured Joe Gomez for the weekend Premier League clash with Newcastle United, with Jeremie Frimpong also missing.**
Frimpong was forced off early in the midweek 6-0 victory over Qarabag, with [Arne Slot](https://www.thisisanfield.com/2026/01/jeremie-frimpong-injury-update-arne-slot-timeframe/) now confirming that the right-back won’t be available for Saturday’s visit of the Magpies:
_“He will definitely not be in the squad for tomorrow. He’s out for a few weeks, but not as bad as we thought he would be out. So something positive from something not so positive.”_
Speaking in the same press conference before the Newcastle game, Slot also said that Gomez will be absent, adding to Liverpool’s injury woes:
_“Ibou trained with us yesterday, trains with us today and will be in the squad tomorrow. Curtis is again available. He was sick as I said, but he is available. Joe will not be available, but that doesn’t have to take much longer anymore. But he will not be available for the weekend.”_
**How will Liverpool line-up against Newcastle?**
-------------------------------------------------
Slot now has a headache when it comes to selection this weekend, given Liverpool’s lack of defensive depth and availability at the moment.
He will have to choose between Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones at right-back, with the former doing an admirable job in the role against Qarabag.
On the plus side, Ibrahima Konate looks set to be available again after the sad passing of his father last week, so he should start alongside Virgil van Dijk. Milos Kerkez could then come in for Andy Robertson at left-back.
The returning Jones may have to settle for a place on the substitutes’ bench, with Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister preferred at the base of the midfield, and Szoboszlai in the No.10 role.
The in-form Florian Wirtz could then be deployed on the left-hand side of the attack, with Cody Gakpo dropping to the bench, and Mohamed Salah and Hugo Ekitike completing the attack.
It may be that Szoboszlai is used at right-back, though, which would then open up a space for Gakpo in the starting lineup, and it will be interesting to see what Slot goes with.
