'I hope': Kenny Dalglish explains what 'may be best' for Liverpool and Andy Robertson after sad admission

Andy Robertson played what could yet be his final game for Liverpool on Wednesday after earning a rare start against Qarabag.

The left-back has been reduced to a back-up role for the first time with the Reds this season following the arrival of Milos Kerkez.

This has led to some disillusion from Robertson, with surprise news emerging last week that he could move to Tottenham Hotspur.

A U-turn has since seemingly been performed, and it now looks more likely that Robertson will stay with Liverpool and see out his current contract, which expires in June.

However, the 31-year-old’s future will be one to watch until the window is closed on Monday evening. A late move cannot be ruled out. Liverpool fans do not want to see Robertson leave, and as doubt continues to shroud his future at Anfield, Reds icon Kenny Dalglish has weighed in on what should now happen.

As a fellow Scot, Dalglish may take a more active interest in what Robertson decides to do this January.

With a first World Cup for 28 years on the horizon this summer, the Liverpool full-back is primarily thinking of his country as he attempts to leave Anfield.

But Dalglish’s focus has always been on Liverpool above anything else, and speaking to Sky Sportsā€˜ The Warm-Up Podcast, the 74-year-old has said he’d prefer to see Robertson stay.

ā€œI hope he stays where he is, because he’s been brilliant for Liverpool,ā€ Dalglish said. ā€œHe’s a decent fella—he’s done a great job.

ā€œI don’t know if he’s going to move on from Liverpool. It may be best to just let it run its course. When his contract is up, it’s up.ā€

ā€œAnd if he has to go somewhere else, it will be sad. I hope the Liverpool supporters get the opportunity, if he is going to go, to say cheerio to him.ā€

Robertson must listen to Dalglish

A proud Scotsman himself, Dalglish will no doubt understand Robertson’s willingness to be as ready as he possibly can be for this summer’s World Cup.

However, his legacy at Liverpool is bigger than whatever happens in the USA, Canada and Mexico for the Tartan Army.

Clearly, participation is a big thing and Scotland will be aiming to get as far as possible. But the reality is that making it to the last-32 would represent a success for them. Essentially, Robertson is willing to cut short his Liverpool stay for the sake of three games, four maximum.

He should really think about whether that will be a regret of his in years to come, and if he is looking for advice on that, then Dalglish has just provided it.

Liverpool may not be Robertson’s focus in six months’ time but while it is, he should give it everything and take the opportunity to say goodbye as a genuine legend.
