Tyrone Mings sends brilliant message to Harvey Elliott after rare Villa appearance

Harvey Elliott’s footballing journey has taken him from wonderkid sensation to professional purgatory in the space of just 18 months.

The 22-year-old midfielder who lit up the Under-21 European Championships as Player of the Tournament last summer now finds himself trapped in one of the most bizarre and frustrating sagas in recent transfer history -frozen out by Aston Villa manager Unai Emery due to a contractual clause that has left him watching from the sidelines while his career stagnates in a crucial World Cup year.

On deadline day in September 2025, Aston Villa secured his services on a season-long loan with what appeared to be a straightforward £35 million obligation,

But buried in the contract’s fine print was a clause that would derail Elliott’s entire season: the £35 million obligation only activated if he made 10 appearances for Villa. Within weeks of Elliott’s arrival, Emery and Villa’s hierarchy reached a devastating conclusion – they weren’t convinced the midfielder was worth £35 million and would deliberately limit his game time to avoid triggering the purchase clause.

By early October, Elliott had accumulated just 97 minutes of competitive football before being completely frozen out of the matchday squad.

Then came Wednesday night’s Europa League clash against RB Salzburg, and finally, a lifeline. With Villa’s place in the round of 16 already secured and key players nursing injuries, Emery named Elliott in the starting XI for his first start since October 2nd.

The match itself descended into chaos. Villa found themselves 2-0 down after Tyrone Mings gifted Salzburg the opener with a defensive error and substitute Moussa Yeo doubled the advantage early in the second half. But Villa showed the resilience that has defined their season, mounting a dramatic comeback with goals from Morgan Rogers and Mings before 19-year-old Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba completed the turnaround three minutes from time.

For Elliott, the 67 minutes represented his longest appearance since September and only his second start of the entire campaign.

Following the final whistle, Elliott took to Instagram to share his feelings about the rare run-out—a chance to remind the football world he still exists.

Tyrone Mings then left a comment on Elliott’s post featuring the now-iconic Ian Wright meme – a GIF of the Arsenal legend reacting in stunned disbelief with wide eyes and an open mouth from a viral clip where Wright reunites with a beloved former teacher he believed had passed away

Despite the light-hearted nature of the joke, there are just days remaining in the January transfer window, Elliott faces the grim reality of sitting out the rest of the season.
