'Wearing my Dan Bun jersey': Newcastle fan Toni Kroos says there's one reason he's desperate to beat Liverpool

Newcastle can count on the help of at least one famous fan as they face Liverpool on Saturday.

Both teams are not in the best of form heading into this weekend’s clash at Anfield, having each suffered defeat last time out in the Premier League.

Only three points separate them in the table, with Newcastle knowing that a rare victory at Anfield would see them leapfrog Liverpool in the table.

The last meeting between the two sides was a classic, as the Reds snatched a late 3-2 win at St James’ Park courtesy of Rio Ngumoha’s first Premier League goal. The game was notable for Newcastle’s dogged display having gone down to 10-men and their spirited performance led to admiration from Real Madrid legend Toni Kroos.

Kroos signed up to become an official Newcastle United member after the Liverpool defeat, but heading into Saturday’s game he has now revealed that his son has actually started to support the Reds instead.

Toni Kroos’ son is a ‘big’ Liverpool fan

Liverpool fans do not have good memories of Kroos having seen him come out on top in two Champions League finals against them.

However, it appears that the Reds may have got the last laugh – in a very small way – as the German confirmed that his son is now a ‘big’ Liverpool supporter.

“The next game is Liverpool against our Newcastle United, where we’re [Kroos and his brother], of course, still Gold members, and I’m really looking forward to it,” Kroos said on his Einfach mal Luppen podcast. “So I checked which games are happening this weekend, and I saw Liverpool vs. Newcastle.

“I’ll tell you one thing: it’s going to be a world-class atmosphere here at home, because Leon (his son) has really become a big Liverpool fan now.

“Yeah. He’s got the Wirtz jersey now, and of course I won’t sit next to him, I’ll be wearing my Dan Burn jersey. Saturday evening is going to be a war, an in-house battle.”

Will Liverpool upset Kroos and delight his son?

There really has not been much at all between Liverpool and Newcastle over the past few meetings between the sides.

However, the Reds have tended to come out on top at home, with the Magpies’ last Anfield win coming way back in 1994.

The Anfield factor has largely disappeared for Liverpool this season, meaning Newcastle may have more hope than ever of ending their 32-year wait.

But under the lights in L4, and on the back of a morale-boosting victory in mid-week, Liverpool will be hoping they can rediscover some magic in the Premier League this weekend.

Set for his first Liverpool vs Newcastle clash as a fan, Arne Slot’s side should be hoping to pile misery onto Kroos on Saturday and delight his son in the process.
