With the Feb. 5 trade deadline nearing, why not explore wild superstar-centered trades that could change the NBA landscape moving forward?
Although Bleacher Report’s Andy Bailey understands that it would be preposterous for the Denver Nuggets to swap their three-time MVP for a 7-foot-4 San Antonio Spurs unicorn this season, he didn’t hesitate to craft a trade involving both star centers.
“Nikola Jokic is still in his prime, has a game that shouldn't be overly affected by declining athleticism, is the best basketball player in the world, has been the best player for over half a decade, and would instantly transform any team's offense,” Bailey wrote Thursday.
“Getting him would probably take another untouchable. Now, in reality, the Nuggets and San Antonio Spurs would probably both say no to a trade involving Jokic and Victor Wembanyama. The latter is significantly younger and is far better on defense than Jokic is or will ever be. The former is more ready to compete for titles right now.”
Bailey’s full trade proposal would send Jokic to the Spurs for Wembanyama, Devin Vassell, and Kelly Olynyk. Wembanyama is unlike any player the NBA has ever seen. The former No. 1 overall pick’s combination of length, guard-like skills, and high-level instincts makes him a nightmare for opponents to match up against on both ends.
That said, it’s highly unlikely the Nuggets would make the mistake of trading Jokic, the top player in the league, after earning three MVP nods, guiding Denver to a championship in 2023, and being the heart and soul of the organization’s offense.
Simply put, while anything can happen in the NBA, there’s a slim chance Bailey’s blockbuster trade concept ever materializes.
