Didi Hamann has revealed Liverpool’s contact with a high profile centre-back target
Former Liverpool star Didi Hamann is ‘sure’ his old club have registered their interest in a new centre-back target who he has describes as the ‘best in Germany’.
The backline has been one of Arne Slot’s biggest headaches this season, as injuries continue to tear through the Reds’ already limited options.
The latest injury blow to Jeremie Frimpong means Liverpool are now without a natural right-back, while centre-back options have also depleted through the absence of Giovanni Leoni and Joe Gomez.
Liverpool looking to sign new centre-backs in the summer
Signing a new central defender has become a matter of urgency for Liverpool, especially as it looks likely Ibrahima Konate will leave the club as a free agent this summer. The France international has also missed the last three games as he took time away from the pitch following the passing of his father.
Liverpool have been linked with the likes of Jeremy Jacquet and Dayot Upamecano recently. The latter is into the final six months of his contract with Bayern Munich and is reportedly stalling on signing a new deal as he is ‘waiting’ for Liverpool.
Hamann claims his old side are also admirers of Nico Schlotterbeck from Borussia Dortmund, who comes with plenty of praise.
Liverpool have ‘inquired’ about Nico Schlotterbeck
Hamann says he is ‘sure’ Liverpool have made contact regarding interest in Schlotterbeck ahead of the summer window. The 26-year-old is out of contract in 2027 and has been turning heads since establishing himself as a key part of Dortmund’s team.
Hamann, who played for Germany between 1997 and 2005, believes Schlotterbeck is the best centre-back the current national team have in their pool.
“Schlotterbeck has really taken on a leading role at Dortmund in the last 18 months. He is probably our best centre-back in the national team. He’ll certainly play at the World Cup for Germany,” the ex-Liverpool midfielder told the Metro.
“He’d be a player. He’s got one year left on the contract. I’m sure that Liverpool inquired about him. He wouldn’t be the worst choice. He’s a left-footed player as well.”
Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are also interested in Schlotterbeck. Dortmund are eager to tie him down to a new contract but have also named a €70 million (£60m) asking price.
