Arsenal are said to be interested in a top striker ahead of the summer.

Arsenal are said to be considering a blockbuster summer deal as they begin planning their next recruitment drive. The Gunners are now in the market for new signings this month having already spent hundreds of millions to build a very impressive squad with incredible depth.

Andrea Berta and Mikel Arteta went big again in the summer just gone, but due to the Financial Fair Play rules and the fact they are already stacked in all areas, Arsenal are not going to be spending again this month barring a huge surprise.

The hidden benefit to that is that the Gunners can already begin to plan their summer transfer business, looking at any areas they want to improve and who might come available, checking in with agents and exploring options.

The 25-year-old has impressed with Atleti, and this season he has continued his good form this season with 11 goals and five assists, with Atletico currently in third.

The tricky part will be striking a deal with Atletico, who have the Argentine under a long-term deal. It would likely take more than £90million to strike a deal, and that would be another huge commitment for Arsenal, who spent more than £60million to sign striker Viktor Gyokeres in the last window.

Sky Sports say Berta is doing due diligence into a possible deal as he looks to reunite with the versatile forward, who is able to play across the front line. Alvarez could provide real competition for Gyokeres, but it would surely mean Gabriel Jesus is let go, and there would also be questions over Kai Havertz’s future if Arsenal were to invest so heavily in the position again.

Simeone on Alvarez

Atletico boss Diego Simeone dubbed Alvarez one of the world’s best when speaking last summer on the back of the forward being left off a FIFA best forwards shortlist. “He’s One of the Best Forwards in the World,” said the Argentine.

“He’s an extremely important player — surely one of the best forwards in the world. He’s ours, we have to take care of him, and hopefully he keeps giving us what he’s been giving — which is a lot.”
