Liverpool lodge enquiry for Jeremie Frimpong replacement as Arne Slot drops transfer hint

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has addressed suggestions that the Reds could sign an emergency right-back following Jeremie Frimpong’s injury and a late move has already been made

Liverpool have reportedly submitted an enquiry for Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries ahead of a potential late move. The Reds find themselves in a defensive crisis after Jeremie Frimpong came off against Qarabag.

He joins Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez on the sidelines, with the Reds now without a recognised right-back ahead of this weekend’s Premier League game with Newcastle. But it appears that Liverpool are willing to dip into the market for a solution.

According to reports in Italy, the Merseysiders have asked Inter Milan for information regarding defender Dumfries. The Dutchman, who has been linked with Manchester United in the past, is a candidate to leave the San Siro this window.

He only has 18 months remaining on his contract with Inter, while the Italian giants are chasing Genoa defender Brooke Norton-Cuffy as his successor. Dumfries, 29, signed for Inter from PSV Eindhoven in 2021 and he has gone on to make 194 appearances for the Serie A side, scoring 25 goals, winning one league title.

He has, however, dealt with his own injury issues this season, having sustained an ankle issue in November, and is yet to return. Liverpool then might be keen to steer clear given they would need someone to come straight in amid Frimpong’s absence.

Offering an update on the defender, Liverpool boss Arne Slot said: "Definitely not in tomorrow, out for a few weeks but not as bad as we thought. So something positive from something not so positive."

Asked if his side could potentially dip into the market, Slot gave an amusing answer. He added: "Yeah, you know the answer. It is that if we think we have a player who can help us and think it is possible, we will do so.

"They are conversations that don't take place in this room. I gave the answer I gave. If that means it's likely or unlikely...OK, it could be a quiet day Monday. You want to play golf?"

Those comments come after Slot left the door open to business ahead of Monday’s deadline. He said: "We as a club always make decisions that we, at least, think [are] smart decisions. So, we not only look at the short term, we also look at the long term, longer term – that's why we sign young players as well, very good players but young ones that can still develop.

"Now we can see this development with a few. And it always depends on are there players available that we think can help us? And if they are, can we afford them? And does this also be helpful for the longer-term future because our players come back from injury as well?"
