£37m midfielder confirms Chelsea have already tried to sign him this month

Chelsea look as if they could be falling into yet another January transfer window where they don’t make any meaningful first team additions.

The Blues are still linked with Jeremy Jacquet, and it has been reported that there could be an update on that saga after they take on West Ham later on today.

Liam Rosenior will be hopeful that he can keep up his strong start at Stamford Bridge against their London rivals, who have enjoyed somewhat of a resurgence in recent weeks.

DISCUSS: Chelsea need Rudiger more than they need Jacquet. 👀

It just makes sense…

Chelsea tried to sign Lucas Paqueta from West Ham

The duo are in the XI after West Ham parted ways with Lucas Paqueta, who had made it clear he was not up for the fight of Premier League survival this season.

The midfielder has joined Flamengo in his home country for £37m (Sky Sports), however admitted that he had an opportunity to join Chelsea, although he wasn’t interested in that prospect.

He told Flamengo TV: “The Tottenham called, the Chelsea called, and the funny thing is that Tatá (his agent) called all excited and said: ‘Chelsea’s calling, they’re gonna make an offer.’ I replied: ‘Okay, but what about Flamengo?’

“He said: ‘Are you serious?’ I said: ‘Yeah, I don’t care about that. I want to hear about Flamengo,’ and that’s how it all turned out.”

Chelsea were briefly linked to Paqueta after reports that he was being told by his agent to stay in Europe if he was to get away from the London Stadium.

It is not the first time that the Blues and the Brazilian have been linked either. Thiago Silva told Chelsea to sign Paqueta all the way back in 2022.

Chelsea’s underwhelming January window

While it remains to be seen how well signing Paqueta would’ve gone down with Chelsea fans, they would no doubt have liked to see someone come through the door this month.

The Blues are deep in a race to finish in the Champions League places this season after their fallaway from the title race in the latter stages of Enzo Maresca’s reign in charge.

It was reported before Rosenior took over that the incoming boss was seeking assurances over January signings before he took over, although that has not occurred up to now.

The Blues have until Monday to make any additions to the squad before they will have to wait again until the summer.
