Curtis Jones has been linked with a move away from Liverpool in the January transfer window, and journalist James Pearce has now had his say on the matter.
On Friday night, the shock claim emerged that Jones could leave his boyhood club this month, with Fabrizio Romano talking up a move to Inter Milan on X:
“Inter are in direct club to club talks with Liverpool for Curtis Jones on loan deal with buy option clause. Negotiations ongoing but linked to Davide Frattesi exit with NFFCwaiting for an answer. Inter and Liverpool, discussing today.”
Now, also taking to X, Pearce has shot down the rumour, replying to a fan who asked him about Jones’ future: “It’s nonsense. Not going anywhere.”
Selling Jones would be a grave error by Liverpool
There was understandable anger surrounding a potential Jones exit from Liverpool fans, not only because he is a homegrown player, but also due to him maturing into such a great squad option for the Reds as the years have passed.
The 25-year-old has so much to offer moving forward, even if he isn’t going to be the next Steven Gerrard – that was always an unfair comparison – with Micah Richards hailing one of his performances for England in the past:
“Curtis Jones was extraordinary, that’s one of the best England debuts I’ve ever seen. And what I mean by that, when you go to England sometimes the pace is a little bit slower and you sort of play the easy pass. If you look at Curtis Jones, his body positions, he was always available for the ball every time.”
It would make no sense to sell such a key figure midway through the season, and although Jones will only have one year remaining on his contract this summer, an extension makes the most sense, considering his best years are still to come.
It may be that Jones and Arne Slot have fallen out, as has been claimed in some quarters, but currently, there is only one figure whom the supporters will side with out of the two, given the latter’s struggles in charge this season.
