Kenny Dalglish has had his say on this recent Liverpool transfer saga

Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish has given the club advice regarding Andy Robertson’s current situation.

The left-back has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur this transfer window as his contract has now entered its final six months.

Recent reports claimed Liverpool were willing to agree a £5 million deal for Robertson and he was said to be open to the idea of a move. The Scotland captain is no longer the undisputed starting left-back since the arrival of Milos Kerkez last summer.

Dalglish recently appeared on The Warm-Up podcast and was asked about Robertson’s situation at Liverpool. The left-back has been with the Reds since 2017, when he signed from Hull City for just £8 million.

Dalglish wants to see his fellow Scotsman stay on Merseyside but he has also advised his former club that it may be best to simply allow Robertson’s contract to ‘run its course’.

“I hope he stays where he is, because he’s been brilliant for Liverpool. He’s a decent fella — he’s done a great job,” Dalglish admitted.

"I don’t know if he’s going to move on from Liverpool. It may be best to just let it run its course. When his contract is up, it’s up.

"And if he has to go somewhere else, it will be sad. I hope the Liverpool supporters get the opportunity, if he is going to go, to say cheerio to him.”

Andy Robertson expected to stay at Liverpool

The Reds currently have Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley out for the season, while Jeremie Frimpong is the latest to be hit with an injury. Joe Gomez has also been absent recently, stretching Arne Slot’s backline dangerously thin.

Ibrahima Konate has also taken some time away from the pitch following the recent passing of his father. During this time, Slot has been forced to rely on the likes of Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo as makeshift defenders.

Liverpool had been looking to re-enter talks over a Marc Guehi transfer but the England international snubbed them for Manchester City, despite coming close to signing for the Reds last summer.

Had Liverpool gone through with the sale of Robertson, their plan was to recall Kostas Tsimikas from loan with Roma to fill the gap left by the vice-captain. However, due to the current injury crisis, it is now looking increasingly unlikely that Robertson’s move to Tottenham will be sanctioned before the deadline.

The Scotland captain has previously played at centre-back when called upon, which could provide further defensive cover, especially if Gomez returns from injury and is made the first choice right-back in absence of Frimpong.
