Newcastle United team news v Liverpool: Bruno Guimaraes missing for the visit to Anfield.

The Magpies’ captain picked up an ankle injury in the 3-0 win over PSV Eindhoven last Wednesday and as a result missed the 2-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa four days later.

Guimaraes travelled with his teammates to France in midweek and took part in a light training session ahead of being named on the bench against Paris Saint-Germain.

But the Brazilian didn’t make it onto the Parc des Princes pitch, as United earned a 1-1 draw against the competition holders.

Newcastle United without Bruno Guimaraes v Liverpool

Eddie Howe confirmed Guimaraes would undergo a fitness test on Friday, and the decision has been taken not to include him in the matchday squad for the visit to Anfield.

Howe said: “Slightly unknown at the moment. I'd say he did really well to be with us in Paris. I think that's more down to the fact that he was desperate to be there and support the players.

“We did very, very light training and he participated in that, but it was next to nothing, to be honest. He trained with us yesterday, but that was more of a test.

“So, let's see how he is today. This will be the day, really, where we decide.”

Joe Willock named on bench despite transfer speculation

Joe Willock, who scored in Paris on Wednesday, is with the squad, despite speculation surrounding his future.

Journalist Ben Jacobs today claimed Newcastle had rejected a £20million bid from Premier League counterparts Fulham but that has quickly been played down.

It’s understood Willock is attracting interest but the Magpies are currently in no mood to sell with both Guimaraes and Joelinton sidelined through injury.
