Liverpool and Newcastle United went head-to-head in Saturday’s late Premier League kick-off, with Arne Slot’s side aiming to end a winless run.
The Reds have largely had favourable games in 2026 so far, barring the Arsenal clash, but remained without a win in five attempts.
It saw Liverpool drop out of the Champions League places prior to the weekend’s action getting underway.

And after Chelsea came from behind against West Ham United earlier in the day, it was a must-win tie for Arne Slot and Co. if they were to avoid losing more ground on their rivals.
When all was said and done, Liverpool came from 1-0 down to win 3-1 and secure their first league victory of 2026.

No late January transfer exits for Liverpool
When Liverpool’s squad for Newcastle was confirmed, there were just four senior outfield players on the bench.
Among them were Curtis Jones and Andy Robertson, both of whom have been linked with moves away this month.

However, the serious lack of depth in the team right now, combined with the Reds not making a single signing so far, means there is zero room for any departures before Monday.
Liverpool can’t rely heavily on Mohamed Salah anymore
One positive coming out of the window is that Mohamed Salah looks set to stay put despite his outburst last month.
The Egyptian’s form since returning to the starting eleven has, however, been mixed.
It did look as though, with Liverpool lacking so few wide options right now, Slot would need the 33-year-old to get back to his best on a consistent basis if there is to be any chance of the season being saved.
However, Hugo Ekitike has now stepped up to become the Reds’ new talisman, with another two goals on Saturday.
Dominik Szoboszlai is wasted at right-back
With Jeremie Frimpong, Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez all missing, Slot decided Dominik Szoboszlai was the man to fill in at right-back this weekend.
The Hungarian does a good job in this role, considering he is playing out of position, but he is much more impactful when playing as a 10.
However, as always, Slot decided to start Cody Gakpo on the left and push Florian Wirtz into Szoboszlai’s best position.
But with Frimpong and Gomez not expected to return just yet, we will likely see a very similar side against Manchester City next week.
