Liverpool earned a 4-1 victory over Newcastle United at Anfield.
Steven Gerrard saluted the performance of Ibrahima Konate in Liverpool’s victory over Newcastle United.
The Reds delivered a 4-1 triumph over the Magpies in what was a stellar attacking display. Liverpool did have to come from behind, with Anthony Gordon opening the scoring for Newcastle. But a Hugo Ekitike double before half-time flipped the game on its head in the Reds’ favour.
Florian Wirtz extended Liverpool’s lead in the second period before Konate added the gloss to the win. Konate returned to the Reds’ team after missing the previous three games following the passing of his father. The centre-back was immense throughout the game and was mobbed by his team-mates after scoring during an emotional celebration.
And Gerrard was hugely impressed by Konate’s display. The former Liverpool captain said on TNT Sports: “That's what type of club this is. In a time like this. He's seen his team-mates have been struggling and they needed him. He was immense from start to finish. He deserved that goal in the end.”
Speaking after the game, Konate said: "For sure I am very happy. I don't have words to describe what I feel right now because it was a very difficult moment for me and my family the last two weeks, but this is part of life. It is hard to accept that and we don't have the choice.
"I know that the team had some injured players, and the manager on the call said to take my time and I don't have to rush back. With this situation [injuries] it was important for me to come back and help the team. I did today with the team at Anfield, the atmosphere was incredible today, and this is what we need until the end of the season."
