SALT LAKE CITY – Jon Absey, the first person to serve as the Utah Jazz Bear mascot, died Sunday after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Absey’s family and friends announced his diagnosis last year as they rallied to raise money for treatment.
“He’s given so much to the community, and now it’s our turn to give back,” the GoFundMe page read. “The journey ahead is challenging, with medical treatments, travel expenses, and the emotional toll that comes with fighting this disease.”
As of Jan. 31, 2026, the fundraiser had collected more than $62,500 toward its $100,000 goal.
Jon Absey Was Jazz Bear for 25 Years
Absey became the first man to perform as the Jazz Bear in 1994 when the team introduced the mascot. He held the role until 2018, when the team moved to a new performer.
The father of three daughters, Absey, performed in more than 800 games with the Jazz. He earned Mascot of the Year honors three times, including in his final season with the organization in 2017–18.

During his tenure, Absey became known for his death-defying stunts, including sledding headfirst down the lower-bowl stairs, performing handstands on 20‑foot ladders at midcourt, and diving through the basketball hoop while doing the splits.
The work took a toll on his body. Absey underwent 10 surgeries and suffered 27 torn ligaments and more than 100 stitches as a result of his performances.
Absey turned 58 in December.
