Why Cavs traded De'Andre Hunter to Kings for 2-player return also involving Bulls

The Cleveland Cavaliers traded for De'Andre Hunter just about a year ago to strengthen their roster.

Now, Hunter is gone, the same means by which he came -- he's been traded to the Sacramento Kings.

The deal was reported late Saturday night by ESPN's Shams Charania and is technically a three-team trade also involving the Chicago Bulls.

Cavs-Kings trade details

The 3-team trade reported by Charania looks like this:

Cavs get: Dennis Schroder, Keon Ellis

Kings get: De'Andre Hunter

Bulls get: Dario Saric, two second-round picks

The Bulls got involved to take Saric's salary off Sacramento's hands with the benefit of getting a couple second-rounders.

Why did the Cavs trade De'Andre Hunter to the Kings?

The Cavaliers had slowly started to faze Hunter out of their main plans.

He wasn't starting lately, and in some games, he was going long stints on the bench.

It's not that Hunter wasn't still useful. He's a solid 3-point shooter and defender. But on a Cavs roster with solid frontcourt depth and length, he may not have been the guy that made a difference in how far Cleveland could go this year.

Hunter has one more year under contract, at $24.9 million for 2026-27. With the Cavs in a tricky salary cap situation going forward, this also could've been on their mind.

ESPN's Charania added that with the savings of this deal also impacting luxury tax payments, this could be worth up to $50 million in savings for Cleveland.

What did Cavs get for De'Andre Hunter?

Cleveland gets point guard Dennis Schroder and shooting guard Keon Ellis in return from the Kings.

Schroder, the 32-year old German point guard, remains a solid playmaker. He has averaged 12.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game this season while shooting 34.3% from 3-point range.

With the Cavs' offseason trade for Lonzo Ball looking like a misfire, Schroder adds another reliable point guard along with Craig Porter Jr. for the games in which Darius Garland is hurting.

Ellis was a popular trade target, including for the Lakers.

He's just 26 years old, and the 6-foot-4 shooting guard is a career 41.6% shooter from 3-point range.

For some reason, he fell out of Sacramento's rotation this season and has only averaged 5.6 points per game, but Ellis proved earlier in his career that he can be a solid NBA player. He will fill a lot of what Hunter did, albeit in a smaller frame.

In an injury-plagued season for the Cavs, getting two solid rotation players like this is a quality move.
