Sunderland defender Lusharel Geertruide is on Liverpool’s radar.

Liverpool are reportedly in talks with Lutsharel Geertruida over a potential deadline-day arrival.

The versatile defender is on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig. However, The Athletic suggests that talks are ongoing to end Geertruida’s spell at the Stadium of Light and to join Liverpool.

The Netherlands international was Arne Slot’s captain at Feyenoord, winning the Eredivisie and KNVB Cup together. Geertruida was linked with a switch to Liverpool when Slot succeeded Jurgen Klopp in the Anfield hot seat.

Instead, Geetruida joined Leipzig but had a somewhat difficult 2024-25 campaign. He moved to newly-promoted Sunderland on a temporary basis in August and has made 17 Premier League appearances so far, with seven coming as starts.

The 25-year-old is highly versatile and is capable of operating as a right-back, centre-back and defensive midfielder.

Liverpool are short in defence, with Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni ruled out for the rest of the season with respective knee injuries, while Jeremie Frimpong is sidelined for a few weeks because of a groin problem.

Geertruida is an international team-mate of Reds players Frimpong, Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo. But the deal would have to be approved by Sunderland, who have been highly impressive since their return to the top flight and sit 11th in the table.

Liverpool will have to complete any deal before the transfer window closes on Monday at 19.00 GMT.
