Breaking: Lutsharel Geertruida transfer talks underway as Liverpool makes move before deadline…

Liverpool could be lining up a late, late move in the transfer window, with the Reds claimed to be in talks over the signing of Lutsharel Geertruida.

The window closes in just over 24 hours, with Liverpool having until 7 pm UK time (2 pm ET) to get any incomings or outgoings over the line. Arne Slot has suggested recently that any new signings look unlikely, although that stance looks to have changed dramatically now.

With both right-backs Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong out injured, and center-backs Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni also on the sidelines, the Reds look to be eyeing up a late move for a new defender.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the club is in talks to sign Geertruida before the window closes tomorrow. Initial contact is said to have been made with Sunderland, and negotiations are taking place between the two clubs.

The 25-year-old is currently on a season-long loan at the Stadium of Light from RB Leipzig, but according to The Athletic, discussions are taking place about ending that agreement and facilitating a move to Anfield.

Arne Slot of course knows Geertruida well from their time together at Feyenoord, with the defender having been previously linked with a move to Anfield, even before Slot was appointed.

He is capable of playing as a right-back, center-back or holding midfielder, which would help Liverpool amid the ongoing injury problems in the back line.

It’s suggested that any deal would have the blessing of Sunderland, even after the Black Cats saw fellow loanee Marc Guiu return to Chelsea. Geertruida has made 17 league appearances for Sunderland, with seven of those coming from the start.

The move for Geertruida comes after Slot hinted on Saturday that Liverpool could make a late attempt to add to its squad before the transfer window closes.

Speaking after the 4-1 win over Newcastle at Anfield, the Reds’ boss was asked about recent rumors linking Curtis Jones with a move to Inter Milan, with Slot seemingly ruling out any moves out of the club, but not any incomings.

“I think there’s always a lot of talk about Liverpool and Liverpool players,” Slot said.

“There was a lot of noise around the club the last week or should I say weeks, but today our fans showed what noise really means. That is being loud, they were so helpful today, that is what noise here is in Liverpool.

“We are trying to strengthen the squad and not trying to weaken it. But yeah, 48-72 hours to go, let us see where the window ends up.”
