Lutsharel Geertruida 'not the only active option' for Liverpool as Reds prepare late transfer move - journalist

Liverpool look likely to make a new signing before the end of the transfer window after making a move for Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida.

The Reds are severely depleted at right-back having seen Conor Bradley recently ruled out for the season and Jeremie Frimpong go down with an injury too.

Dominik Szoboszlai filled in at full-back against Newcastle on Saturday, but it is clear that Liverpool need a more natural option for the rest of the campaign.

Geertruida emerged as a target on Sunday morning, with numerous reports since confirming that Liverpool are looking at a loan move for the 25-year-old.

However, journalist Lewis Steele has now revealed that Geertruida is not the only ‘active target’ for the Reds heading into the final 48 hours of the window.

Lutsharel Geertruida move could be complicated

As Geertruida is currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, there is some complication attached to this potential transfer.

Both Steele and fellow reporter David Lynch acknowledge as much on Sunday morning, with both confirming that Liverpool are also looking at other potential options.

“Lutsharel Geertruida was scouted by Liverpool many times last season at RB Leipzig,” says Steele. “He appeals as he is versatile and knows Arne Slot well. Discussions are complex given three parties involved (he’s on loan at Sunderland) but LFC are in talks trying to make it happen.

“He’s not the only active option they are looking at/have looked at in the last 72 hours.”

“Lutsharel Geertruida is one of the options Liverpool are considering as they chase defensive reinforcements before the end of the transfer window,” Lynch adds. “The Dutchman is currently on loan at Sunderland, which I’m told makes the move slightly complicated.”

Who could be Liverpool’s short-term right-back transfer fix?

Who could the other options be?

Although Liverpool’s move for Geertruida did not come out of nowhere – the Reds clearly need a new addition – it was not a name anybody had been putting forward recently.

As a result, it is very hard to gauge who the other potential targets could be at this stage.

Liverpool have sprung some surprises in the January transfer window before, with the 2021 moves for Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak the prime examples of this.

The standard of arrival is likely to be better this time around, but it could quite feasibly be any name you could dream up in European football.

Geertruida appears to be the main target for now, but if the deal does eventually prove to be too complex, we’ll soon find out the names of the others on the shortlist.
