Liverpool have opened talks with Sunderland to sign Lutsharel Geertruida on loan for the remainder of the season, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The 25-year-old is currently on a season-long loan deal at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, but discussions are ongoing to terminate his loan deal at the Black Cats and ease a move to Anfield.
Geertruida has made 17 Premier League appearances so far for Sunderland, including 10 starts.
Liverpool have had a quiet winter transfer window so far after long-term target Marc Guehi moved to Manchester City earlier in January.
But due to the Reds’ injury concerns, they have begun to work actively in the transfer window before it closes in just over 24 hours.
Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley are out for the rest of the season with their respective knee injuries. Ibrahima Konate has just returned from compassionate leave, following the death of his father a fortnight ago, but is the only senior defender available to partner Virgil van Dijk, with Joe Gomez suffering from injury problems.
Jeremie Frimpong is also on the Reds’ infirmary list with a hamstring issue, which forced Dominik Szoboszlai to be deployed at the fullback role in yesterday’s 4-1 victory over Newcastle United.
Arne Slot worked with Geertruida at former Club Feyenoord, and he produced the best football of his career in the 2023/24 campaign, scoring eight goals and providing five assists from fullback in the Eredivisie.
Liverpool are also said to be in the hunt for Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet; however, they face a battle with Chelsea for his services.
Reports claim that the Londoners have the advantage in the race to sign the 20-year-old, with some outlets claiming that his preference is Stamford Bridge, but the Ligue 1 side are said to want to keep the stopper beyond this window.
The versatile Geertruida is capable of playing either right-back, centre-back or holding midfielder, and his addition to Slot’s squad will be a big boost for Liverpool.
