Liverpool are holding talks as they try and get a late deal done for Lutsharel Geertruida, who is currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig

Liverpool have opened talks to try and complete a late deal for Sunderland defender Lutsharel Geertruida as they aim to sign a new defender before Monday’s 7pm transfer deadline.

The Reds are short of options in defence following season-ending injuries to Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni while Jeremie Frimpong and Joe Gomez are also out with injury but both are expected to play again this campaign.

The 25-year-old is highly versatile and is capable of operating as a right-back, centre-back and defensive midfielder - something that could invaluable to the Reds as they battle a number of injury problems.

Geertruida joined Sunderland on loan in the summer from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig. He has made 17 Premier League appearances for the Black Cats so far, with seven coming as starts.

In a major boost to Liverpool, the Stadium of Light club do not plan to stand in the way of the defender moving to Anfield - given the ‘scale of the opportunity’ but the Black Cats do want to find a replacement before allowing him to leave.

Speaking about the end of the Reds’ window, Slot said after the 4-1 victory over Newcastle United: “I think there’s always a lot of talks about Liverpool and a lot of talks about Liverpool players.

“There was a lot of noise around the club the last week, [or] maybe I should say weeks. I think our fans showed today what noise really means – that’s being loud, because they were so helpful today. So that is what noise here is in Liverpool.

“I think we are trying to strengthen the squad and not trying to weaken it. Forty-eight hours, I don’t know how long to go, but let’s see when the window ends.”
