Liverpool have begun to explore a deal for the defender.

The Reds cruised to an emphatic victory last night over Newcastle United, and whilst spirits are high, transfer news has now arrived that will boost morale even more.

Liverpool have been unfortunate this season to have become very light in the defensive department.

Injuries to Giovanni Leoni, Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong, as well as Joe Gomez coming in and out of the team has left Arne Slot with a real dilemma.

In recent weeks we have seen Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo fill in when needed, but Slot will be hoping that is only a temporary fix with the announcement of a potential deal being struck up this morning.

Netherlands defender Lutsharel Geertruida is the centre of attention, with Liverpool in club-to-club talks with RB Leipzig to secure him on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Currently on loan at Sunderland, David Ornstein has explained how Liverpool can get this one over the line.

“Geertruida move needs RB Leipzig to break Sunderland loan and Liverpool to strike a deal with both clubs. Sunderland want a replacement and compensation. 75% chance.”

Geertruida has impressed whenever he’s featured for Sunderland this season so he’d be a miss for the Black Cats, but he is a very desirable asset to Liverpool.

Possessing an ability to play across the backline as well as a defensive midfielder, this is something Arne Slot knows well after he coached the player during his time at Feyernoord.

Following Liverpool’s 4-1 win over Newcastle United last night, Arne Slot hinted at potential transfer activity.

He said: “We are trying to strengthen the squad, not trying to weaken it. Let’s see when the window ends.”

It is a move that makes sense, with Geertruida playing under Arne Slot for three seasons but also now has proof that he has what it takes to compete to a high level in the Premier League, having featured 17 times for Sunderland so far this season, starting 7 times.

🚨 Geertruida move needs RB Leipzig to break Sunderland loan & Liverpool to strike deal with both. #SAFC want replacement (agreement close) + compensation. Chances rated ~75%. #LFC have other options (included Dumfries/Jones but less likely) @TheAthleticFC https://t.co/5KWOzLzic6
