Sky Reporter Confirms Club Have Given“Green Light”To Liverpool Move As“Full Agreement”Reached

RB Leipzig have given Liverpool the “green light” to sign defender Lutsharel Geertruida on loan for the rest of the season, according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.

Writing on his X account, the journalist said the player has already “reached a full agreement” with the Reds, so now everything depends on Sunderland.

Geertruida is currently on a season-long loan at the Stadium of Light and he has started 10 games in all competitions for Regis Le Bris’s team.

They may want to find a replacement for the Dutchman before approving the deal, so this could drag on until Deadline Day.

Why do Liverpool want Geertruida?

The Reds have been looking for short-term solutions to reinforce the backline following the injuries sustained by Conor Bradley, Jeremie Frimpong as well as Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni.

Geetruida is ostensibly a right-back, but he can also provide cover in the centre of defence, which makes him an ideal option to add depth in two key positions for the second half of the campaign.

The defender won the Eredivisie with Slot

Another important reason why Geertruida has been targeted is his relationship with head coach Arne Slot, who managed him for three years at Feyenoord.

The pair won the Eredivisie title in 2023, as well as the Dutch Cup a year later. In his last season with Slot, Geertruida arguably had the best 12 months of his career, scoring 9 goals and providing 5 assists in 47 appearances.

That led to his €20m switch to Leipzig in the summer of 2024, but after just one season, he was allowed to leave on loan to Sunderland. He could potentially be reunited with Slot only 18 months after they last worked together. It is a deal to keep a close eye on over the next day or so.
