Liverpool are looking at long-term options to strengthen their options at centre-back

Liverpool need some younger players in at centre-back with three of their four senior options out of contract by 2027.

Ibrahima Konate has yet to agree a new contract with his deal set to expire this summer. Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both out of contract in 2027 to leave Giovanni Leoni as the only senior option under contract for the long-term.

The Reds have several young centre-backs in their youth ranks but they need to add some experience to their ranks after missing out on Marc Guehi after he joined Premier League rivals Manchester City this month.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool remain in the race for Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet. Posting on X, he said: “The battle for Jeremy Jacquet remains very much ongoing at this stage. Understand Liverpool and Chelsea are both in talks with Rennes and player’s camp for the defender. Bayern unlikely.

“Jacquet would only join in July 2026, as Rennes want.”

According to GOAL, Rennes will demand £60m to part ways with Jacquet, who will turn 21 this summer.

Jacquet made his professional debut for Rennes two years ago when he was just 18 and has become a key player for the club this season after spending last campaign on loan at League Two side Clermont.

His preference for a move does appear to be Chelsea but Liverpool are still in talks. Rennes would be happy to agree a deal to sell the player this month but will not sanction his exit until the summer.

Giving a more detailed update on his YouTube channel, Romano said: “The only thing that changed is that compared to two, three days ago, Bayern are a very unlikely solution because the boy wants to go to the Premier League.

“There is Chelsea pushing, but don't forget also Liverpool. In the Premier League, I would say there is a lot of movement around Jeremy Jacquet. And the situation is still open from what I'm hearing. Why? Because Chelsea went all-in to get the player immediately, but Rennes only want to sell the player now and let him go in the summer, not in January.

“This is Rennes' position. Very clear, very strong, and Rennes don't need money immediately. Why? Because they sold Meïté to Al-Hilal, 18-year-old striker, 30 million euros plus add-ons. So, this is why the situation is still open.

“Chelsea are absolutely trying, Liverpool are still trying, and there are more movements in the Premier League around this boy. So, get ready for crazy hours around Jeremy Jacquet.”

The versatile defender is on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig. However, it has been suggested that talks are ongoing to end Geertruida’s spell at the Stadium of Light and to join Liverpool.
