Liverpool have a back-up target to Lutsharel Geertruida who Dominik Szoboszlai knows very well - journalist

Liverpool look likely to complete a last-minute deal to sign a right-back in the January transfer window.

The Reds currently have zero natural options to fill the position, with Dominik Szoboszlai asked to fill in during Saturday’s win over Newcastle.

Since then, Lutsharel Geertruida has emerged as a primary target for Liverpool as Arne Slot tries to reunite with his former Feyenoord captain.

But a deal for Geertruida looks complicated. Sunderland have him on loan from RB Leipzig, meaning Liverpool need to negotiate with both clubs to bring the Dutchman to Anfield.

Sunderland are reportedly happy for Geertruida to go but are seeking compensation in order to cancel their loan agreement. As a result, Liverpool may need to target a back-up option. And according to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Galatasaray’s Rolland Sallai is on the radar.

Liverpool could move to sign Rolland Sallai

Earlier this week it had looked possible that Liverpool could sign Denzel Dumfries to alleviate their right-back concerns.

After news emerged of their efforts to sign Geertruida, journalist David Ornstein confirmed that Dumfries is still an option, albeit an unlikely one at this stage.

As per Tavolieri’s post on X, Sallai may be a more active alternative.

“Liverpool have a concrete interest in Lutsharel Geertruida. Case is being pushed internally by Arne Slot, who knows the qualities of his compatriot well,” said the reporter.

“Roland Sallai, of Galatasaray, represents another alternative if Sunderland were to block the deal.”

Who is Rolland Sallai?

At 28 years old, Sallai would be a more experienced option for Liverpool to go for this January.

The Galatasaray man is one of the stars of the Hungary national team, and as a result knows both Szoboszlai and Milos Kerkez very well indeed.

With 15 goals in 64 caps for his country, Sallai has plenty of top-level football under his belt.

He joined Galatasaray in September 2024 after spending six years with Freiburg and is also capable of playing a plethora of other positions.

Geertruida appears to be the main target here, but in case of any complications it would not be a surprise to see Liverpool pivot towards Sallai.
