Liverpool player likely to move on if Lutsharel Geertruida takes final non-homegrown spot - journalist

Liverpool are working on a deal to sign Lutsharel Geertruida on loan before the close of the January transfer window.

The Reds are desperately short both at right-back and centre-back for the second half of the campaign and Geertruida represents a cheap and versatile short-term option.

The deal is not done yet, and there remains some negotiating to do with both Sunderland and RB Leipzig, who still own the 25-year-old’s contract. But the hope is that Geertruida will soon reunite with his former Feyenoord coach Arne Slot.

Liverpool supporters have noticed one issue with the Netherlands international joining, however: their non-homegrown spots are all currently being filled. That means that one player will have to give up his spot or leave for Geertruida to be registered.

With Andy Robertson and Federico Chiesa attracting interest this month, both are potential candidates to free up the space. But according to journalist James Pearce, it will more likely be young right-back Calvin Ramsay who makes way.

Calvin Ramsay likely to go on loan before Monday

Ramsay has had an unexpected renaissance at Liverpool this season. However, Slot has made it clear that he prefers other options at right-back.

As Pearce reports on X, this will likely mean the 22-year-old leaves on loan before Monday’s deadline.

“If Liverpool complete the deal for Geertruida then Calvin Ramsay could leave on loan before tomorrow’s deadline. Interest from the Championship,” says the reporter.

Even if Ramsay does not end up leaving, Geertruida’s arrival would likely mean an end to his involvement in the Premier League squads anyway.

If either Robertson or Chiesa go, this could change. But for now both players look likely to stay at Liverpool.

What’s the latest on Geertruida’s move?

Even if Liverpool do not sign Geertruida, the Reds reportedly have other back-up options just in case.

Galatasaray’s Rolland Sallai is claimed to be on Liverpool’s radar and he would be another who would obviously take a non-homegrown spot.

However, all the latest noises make it sound relatively likely that Liverpool will be able to secure their number one target.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that the Reds already have an agreement with the player, and are now embarking on talks with both Sunderland and Leipzig to come to an arrangement.

Things will need to move quickly, but it sounds like Liverpool are very much on it. While that could be bad news for Ramsay’s Reds career, he will hopefully rediscover his best form while away in the Championship.
